Scorpion Animation

For my seventh animation (unit 10) I had to create a scorpion walk cycle. I used the recommended scorpion rig by Kiel Figgins to complete this task. The rig is slightly different to a real scorpion in the fact that it only has six legs instead of eight. However, this doesn’t affect the movement in an impactful way.

When importing the rig into Maya I encountered some issues with parts of the rig (the right legs and pincer) being black. I am not sure what has caused this issue – textures, lighting, software – so I have not been able to fix it. I have ruled out file corruption, as I have downloaded the rig numerous times from different sources.

Because the scorpion moves in a very similar way to the spider, this unit was very simple. I did however, have issues when animating the tail as the rotation axis changed for each point. This was easy to fix after I realised the issue. As with the other units I particularly enjoyed animating the overlapping bounce and sway to the pincers.

Hi, my name is Alex, I am currently doing a masters in animation at the University of Hertfordshire. Before that I studied game design at the University of Wolverhampton. I have a passion for animation, computer games, 3D modelling and drawing.

I am proficient in Unreal Engine and Blender and have some skills in 3DS Max and Maya.
