Learning Maya 2025

My animation course started a few days ago, unfortunately due to some technical issues where I was unable to access the units, I haven’t been able to start until today.

As I have never used Maya before I decided to do the inbuilt tutorial that popped up when it first loaded. I got to help Maya’s robot mascot move boxes from different locations as it taught me how to navigate the menus, move around the workspace, and shortcut keys for certain actions. Maya is very similar to 3DSmax, a software that I have used before, which made it a lot easier to learn, as things that I could remember from that program would usually work in Maya.

I am not a huge fan of are the shortcut keys for the Move, Rotate and Scale tools being W,E and R. Due to the fact that I mainly use Blender, I am much more used to these keys being G,R, and S as, at least for scale and rotate, the keys are the start of the actual word. I am certain that I am going to be pressing R to rotate things and then accidently scale them for a while.

Hi, my name is Alex.

I’ve been passionate about animation since I was six years old. I used to create short videos with my Star Wars Lego figures bringing my stories to life. I’ve been doing the same kind of thing ever since and when I had the opportunity to learn the skills and software needed to build and animate for games, I jumped at the chance. My love for video games meant that Game Design was an obvious choice for my degree and showed me that, actually, animation was the way I wanted to go. I am currently doing a Master's in Character and Creature Animation at the University of Hertfordshire. Before that I studied Game Design at the University of Wolverhampton.

I am proficient in Maya, Blender, and Unreal Engine, and also have experience of 3DS Max and Rokoko Motion Capture Software.
